Andris Merkmanis (1943–2006)
Born into the family of scenographer and architect Leonīds Merkmanis and actress Vilma Vārna.
Graduated from J. Rozentāls Riga Art High School. Studied scenography at the Latvian Academy of Art's Painting Department under the guidance of G. Zemgals. Diploma work - decorations and costumes for the musical "Kiss Me" at Riga Operetta Theater. Created scenography not only for productions in all Latvian theaters but also for more than ten
feature films. Member of the Artists' Union since 1970. Also worked in portrait and landscape painting using oil, watercolor, and tempera techniques.
