The Golden Temple (Japanese: 金閣寺 Kinkaku-ji) is a novel by Japanese writer Yukio Mishima. It was serialized from January to October 1956 in the magazine "Shincho," and later published as a standalone book in the same year. It was awarded the Yomiuri Literary Prize. The novel is presented as a pseudo-confession, offering the author's version of the story of a mentally unstable monk who burned down the Kinkaku-ji temple in Kyoto in 1950. This novel is not only considered one of the pinnacles of Mishima's work but also ranks among the most widely read works of Japanese literature worldwide.
