When using metered dose inhalers, it is important to follow the correct inhalation technique: "First, exhale deeply, place the mouthpiece between your teeth, and then begin to inhale through your mouth. Immediately after starting to inhale, press down on the top of the canister to release the medication dose. Continue with a steady and deep inhalation, after which you should hold your breath." Children and elderly people often cannot properly coordinate exhalation, inhalation, medication spraying, and breath-holding, resulting in the sprayed aerosol not reaching the lungs and the therapy becoming ineffective. A spacer facilitates and simplifies the inhalation procedure and can be used by patients of any age, but is recommended for ages 1-5 years.
