The translations of Scottish writer Irvine Welsh's novels Trainspotting (translated by Jānis Elsbergs in 2005, AGB) and Porno (translated by Zigurds Skābarzis in 2016, “Dienas Grāmata”) into Latvian have now been joined by the third book in the trilogy, The Blade Artist — “Asmens mākslinieks”, an elegant and sparkling novel — highly violent, yet strangely conciliatory.
At the center of attention is the same Frank Begbie, already well-known from other Irvine Welsh novels, but now in a completely
different guise. Once a petty Edinburgh thug and a proper scoundrel, now, having served time in prison, Frank has changed significantly. He has a house in California, a beautiful wife, and two daughters, but most importantly… he is a recognized, sought-after, and wealthy sculptor. But — what has happened to Begbie's fierce nature? It hasn't disappeared and can't disappear, and that's exactly what Irvine Welsh tells in his characteristic grotesque and ironic manner.
